What's That Mutt: Guess the breeds in my dog's family tree

gail's dog.jpgI am the lucky owner of two shelter dogs and, like a lot of people with dogs of unknown origin, I've always wondered, "What exactly are my dogs made of?"

Well, now I know -- at least about one of them. Meet Skylar, my puzzle dog! Skylar was found as a puppy by animal control in southern Alabama. She was wandering down the side of the road with no mom, siblings or owners in sight.

They picked her up and she ended up in a shelter in Pensacola, FL. From there it was just a short time until she found her way into our home and our hearts, but we always wondered exactly what kind of dog breeds she came from.

Yesterday we got our answer! We had used the Canine Heritage Breed Test to take a sample of her DNA. It was really easy. We just got the testing kit from them (www.canineheritage.com or your local Petco), swabbed her cheek and mailed in the DNA. Now we have a certificate that tells us all about her.

But before I reveal the answer -- what do YOU think she's made of? There's another photo after the jump.

wtf

You dog looks exactly like my long-haired chihuahua. Same color and all - I just didn"t know how tall your dog is, but Puddin
is about 10" to 12" and about 12 lbs. She is the sweetest dog
you will ever meet and very sensitive. Just the perfect pet as well as the short-haired chihuahua and the dauchound that
I have. My girls are just the greatest.

I cannot understand as sign to your RSS

I have a dog that looks almost IDENTICAL...and was told that he was a Chow/shepherd mix by the people at the shelter that he was adopted from. He has the same gorgeous color, and actually has the fluffy ears as well. He looks almost like a very big fox...he has the red of the Chow. Whatever she is she is absolutely adorable!!

Golden Retriever and Border Collie

not a dog!

My wife and I had a dog identical to Skylar. His name was Iggy and he came from the local shelter. He was my first dog and he was absolutely perfect. My father, who never liked dogs, couldn't wait for us to go on vacation so he could have Iggy stay with him for a week or so. Anyway, we always thought Iggy was a Sheltie / Golden Retriever mix.
Incidentally, we took Iggy to an obedience class since I had never trained a dog. He easilly finished at the top of the class and the instructor asked us to take him to more advanced classes. We never had to put a leash on him as he would follow foot and voice commands faultessly. We could tell him to "stay" outside a store and go in to shop. At 12.5 years, about 10 years ago, Iggy had to be put to sleep because of kidney failure.
Our whole family still misses him

Cocker, toller, sheltie

i think corgi because of the ears and coat i had one that looks just like that ,also maybe somekind of terrier

Papillion and golden retriever

I think it's a golden retreiver and papillon mix.

collie, papillion and shepherd

I say papillon (the ears say that) and chesapeake bay retriever,

I think it is a golden Retriever. because it has a golden coat.

golden border collie

for me my guess would be golden retriever/ collie mix??? i saw one of theese online and im just guessing. this breed is SOOO cute!!!

I say Papillion and sheltie

Corgi/Golden?

Very CUTE mixed breed Skylar is! I at first guessed Corgi (for the body) .. Papillon (for the ears) and Golden Retriever (for the gorgeous face and fur color) .. yet I found out I was completely wrong! I read the results, and I couldn't beleive my eyes that she was part Springer Spaniel, Plott hound and everything else that didn't match her standards! I'd get her re-tested, because if you look closely at her face, she DEFINITLEY has Goldie in her! No doubt about it! Plus, her body shape might be from a Corgi or a Sheltie, or even Dachshund because she's longer. Her ears: perfect example of a Papillon's. Those butterfly ears are unmistakeable! Her fur color might even be from a NSDTR (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) .. Anyhoo .. whatever she is, she's a cutie! Lucky to have her!

ridgeback, collie, german shephers, pomerianian

Sheltie/Pomeranian

My guess is Collie and Corgi, or Collie and Shetland Sheepdog. Those aren't chihuahua ears, but she got them somewhere!

I think it is Golden retriever/corgi

The ear!

I think she's border collie and Papillon. (I'm guessing Papillon because of her distinctive feathered ears.

Golden Retreiver, Dachshund and Corgi

I THINK I KNOW! Wow, this mutt is one of the most prettiest one's I've seen! She's (or He's) absolutley adorable!! ***NOTE*** If you look at TODAY'S picture on the Dog-a-Day 365 Calendar AND if you look at 10/27/08 .. these pictures look very similar! I am a HUGE dog lover fan, "Dog" being my first word .. no joke! My first glance at her, I thought she was a Golden Retriever/Corgi Mix .. but .. she could even be part Papillon as well .. Her ears are definitley that 'butterfly' look. The face is defnitley Goldie .. body is Corgi and Ears are papillon .. I hope I helped!!

OMgosh... she looks just like my dog, Harley (an adoption thru Petfinder)!! check out "10/27/08" on the Workman Publishing 365-Dog-a-Day desk calendar. We love her to pieces and have always wondered what she could be. They look a lot alike, even to the 'white feet', long-haired but not bushy tail, and the color!! Haven't followed the jump yet - can't wait to see the test results.

I would say she is probably part corgi, shelti? she definently has the ears and body of both!

My guess is collie/sheltie and some kind of spaniel.

Papillons are wayy too small!!! In my opinon I Would say a flat-coated retriver with some border collie an maybe a liitle Irish Setter!

I haven't read the other answers, although I've seen Golden Retriever pup, so someone might already have guessed the same as I. I do not think there could be any golden retriever in the primary mix.

I think she's primarily NOVA SCOTIA TOLLING DUCK RETRIEVER. Her ears have a broad base and are low set. Her skull is in addition quite broad for a retriever, so I'd guess something with some sort of shepherd or terrier with pricked or semi pricked ears.

As a geneticist student I just got to say that the whole business of selling kits to determine breed is iffy at best.
You can only identify someone, dog or humans, genetic heritage on the direct, primary paternal or maternal line, everything else can, and mostly are mixed around until you couldn't figure out where what genes came from.
The genes also act differently with the unenviable interaction with other genes, making the traits different. This is esp. evident when observing mix breed dogs that you know the parentage of.
Some genes are so dominant, and mainly those are major genes controlling a massive combined function, that that trait can override all other involved in the same trait resulting in the dog getting the trait usually associated with one of the breeds.

Border collie and Papillion maby!

I would say, golden retriever and chihuahua

I would say beagle and sheltie type.

Collie(or Border Collie), Corgi, and Papillion? She's absolutely adorable, whatever the mix! I looove her ears!

Working at a shelter I saw a lot of puppies that looked nothing like their mom, or what we knew their mix to be. It makes things kind of fun.

PLEASE TELL US!! =)

I dont know what breed she is. But she sure is cute!

Ears look border collie-ish. If she doesn't have any golden retreiver in her, I'm stumped.

Are there any breeds in her that you wish you didn't know about? I'm afraid I might find out that my beagle-basset mix is actually a bassett-jack russell. Of course I would still love her anyway.

Sheltie/Terrier mix ? Maybe

she/he is so cute

Thanks for making some guesses! I will give you a little more information before the "reveal" :) She's about 18 inches high at the top of her shoulders and weighs about 31 pounds. I will also tell you that I always thought she had some Golden Retreiver in her and have had a lot of people ask me if she is a GR puppy but.......... according to DNA results-no Golden in her!

Golden Retriever and Corgi? How tall is she and what is the weight?

chihuahua and retreiver?

She's definitely got some Golden Retriever in there!

Golden retriever, collie and something small that only shows up in the stature, not in the look.
I'm going with golden retriever, collie and beagle ...

Collie and... Papillion?
