Here's Angel in her Petfinder photo
For all the bad press that pit bulls get, it's nice to see the media give some attention to a hero pit -- and one who happens to be a shelter dog, no less! The Associated Press picked up the story of the aptly named Angel, a 2-year-old boxer/pit mix living at the Nevada Humane Society in Reno.
Angel was being walked by volunteer Frank Gomez and his 9-year-old stepson, Joel Fontes, when she became fixated on something in the nearby bushes. Turns out it was a box of six abandoned three-week-old kittens.
See a pic of the kittens and read more on this story after the jump.
NHS staff were quickly summoned, but not before one of the kittens escaped from the box. After returning to the scene, Angel instantly pulled Frank to the lost kitten, gently picked her up, and handed her over to safety. All together now: Awwwwww!
Angel the hero dog is still awaiting her forever home, and the six kittens are in need of fostering, so if you want to give this heartwarming story an even happier ending, contact the Humane Society at 775-856-2000 or info@nevadahumanesociety.org.
And if you don't live near Reno, there are more than 9,000 pits on Petfinder waiting to be adopted, and countless kittens to be fostered at a shelter near you.

I am so happy that someone told a positive story about a pitbull. I had a red nose pit for 8 yrs. and she died. I miss her so much and she was so loyal to me. I was sick and she stayed in bed with me for three days because I was in bed for three days. She either loved me a lot or just plain lazy. Actually she was both. lol. I miss her every day. She is the best dog I have ever had by far. She loved to be loved. I resued her from an abusive home many years ago. I still see her sweet little face when I come home and she was so happy to see me.
That's so COOL that Angel a Pit Bull saved those six Gorgous little kittens!I've always heard bad things about Pit's,you know like biting people but it's not even their fault. It's the humans fault they abuse them and use and breed them for fighting that they just get to the point to where they can't take it anymore and so they strike. There only trying to protect themselves it's very cruel to make them fight to the death.AND IT'S GOTTA STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am loving this story!! My mother found a pregnant pit bull back in July. She is the friendliest dog ever!!!! She just doesn't like other dogs. Well, needless to say, we didn't find her owner. Our neighbor rescues bait dogs and he thinks she belonged to a house a couple blocks up from us that used her for breeding to turn the puppies into fighting dogs! Good thing we found her. She is truly a sweetheart. Well on August 19 she had eight adorable puppies! She is really a great momma. She looks to be a baby herself! She's probably about a year old. So if there's anyone out there who happens to be looking for a nice pit bill or puppies...I'm your girl! :) The puppies are located in Bradenton, FL. I'm in college in Fort Myers, so I haven't seen them in a couple weeks, but I hear that they're still cute! So if you're interested, e-mail me at schlizabeth@yahoo.com. I wish there were more stories like the one posted though!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this positive article about a pit. It seems that the majority of the time the media is only interested in the sensationalism of the menacing "killer" dog. It's a shame that the loyal, gentle pets that pits can be isn't more newsworthy.
What a great Story.. Such a big bad mean Pitbull lol
I am praying that Angel finds a Loving home.. And people who abandon animals. Well. I hope one day they suffer the same fate of that kind in some way,someday..
Love and Happiness to Angel.
xoxoxoxo
WHAT A GREAT STORY!!!!
Yeahhhhh positive Pit Bull Press!!
We just wanted to thank all those who volunteer out there for the dogs and to PETFINDER-- We love you all!
Im going off to hug my gaggle of Pit bulls now.....
Being a lover of the pit bull I wish these type of stories would reach a larger audience! Only the bites make it to the mainstream news unfortunately. I also wish we could clone Cesar Milan as he frequently uses his well balanced pits in rehabilitating problem dogs on his show.
Hello Emily,
Is it just me, or do the best pets seem to come from the worst places?
The best cat I ever had came from people who truly didn't care about him, and the best dog I have ever had came from an elderly man who couldn't care for him very well, and only took him in the first place because his neighbors insisted he needed a puppy after his wife passed. He didn't even want the little guy.
The best advice I could give anyone looking for a pet is to look among the unwanted.
Thanks for the GOOD news for a change,
Russell...
That is so cute
Many shelters have a 'no adopt' rule for people who drop off animals at the shelter. If you relinquish your pet, you cannot adopt any other animals for at least a year. This is a good rule, but uncaring people will simply dump animals rather than bring them to the shelter and then be identified as a DNA. Sad but true. Others are simply too embarrassed to bring the animals in or think there is some kind of financial penalty for turning animals in.
Ye gads, those aren't just SIBLING kittens; they must be CLONES! They are absolutely adorable and look identical.
One does wonder what goes through the minds--if anything--of people who abandon too-young-to-be-separated-from-their-mothers pets, leaving them without food, water, or shelter. Why not find a rescue group? Or take them to a shelter? Why would you hide them in the bushes like that?
