[H]e's familiar with the breed and its personality. He's excited to bring it home when it gets a little older and has promised that his grandchildren can name it after the New Year. (DelawareOnline.com)This is clearly disappointing news to all of us who've dedicated our lives to getting homeless pets out of shelters.
Now I'm not against buying dogs *in theory* -- everyone in animal welfare wishes we lived in a world where there were no animal shelters because every pet was in a loving home for its entire life. There would be no unwanted litters, no pets being abandoned because their owners wouldn't or couldn't care for them. In that world, you'd HAVE to buy a dog.
In the *real* world, there are at this moment more than 7,670 adoptable German shepherds and German shepherd mixes and more than 8,700 adoptable shepherd mixes waiting for their forever homes on Petfinder.
Biden loves purebred sheps, you say? And he for some reason needed to get a dog in Pennsylvania? Well he would have been in luck, had he checked Petfinder: We've got two Shepherd-specific rescue groups in the state: Save a Shepherd Rescue Alliance in Hatfield and German Shepherd Rescue of Southeastern PA in Philadelphia.
Biden wants a puppy, you argue? Well a quick search on Petfinder turns up plenty of adorable baby sheps, including Donder (right), at a rescue in Coatesville, PA, a mere 25 miles from Biden's breeder.
Let's hope that the famously gaffe-prone Biden realizes his mistake and adopts a shelter pooch to keep his new puppy company. And let's hope that Obama does a better job choosing his own family pet.

there is nouthing wrong with breeding.
lets look at more inportant things like, shelters and pounds doing gas chambers to euthinize animals weather than using the injection.
i say no more gas chambers and spay and neuter your pets, but we all know that there are stupid people out there that think fixing there animal is going to change there dogs attitude.
but its not.
I work for several rescues in the Chester County area...and where I always preach about all the homeless animals in need of a good home I also refer people towards breeders.
Alot of our dogs are mixes...& we don't really know what the "mix" in there may be.
I would commend him for actually going to a respectable breeder rather than a pet shop full of puppy mill puppies or from backyard breeders.
With Biden becoming part of the public eye I think he made a wise decision in going to a breeder where he could meet the mother and father and know their temperment. I know that is not a guarentee of the pups temperment, but the breeder would be able to work with the puppy closely up until the day it leaves the den. This will ensure an extremely socialized puppy.
The last thing rescues would need is the possibility of him going to a rescue for such a strong demanding yet beautiful dog and their be socialization issues and possible aggression issues that would have to be worked out....
The public wouldn't care that this is what we have to deal with sometimes with rescues but through proper love and training the dog will come around...
No, the public would see a dog with many issues and problems....a menice....and then it would be plastered all over the internet and the papers putting a spot light on rescues as being bad and not providing the proper training and socializing before giving an animal up to a new home...
But there would be no mention of the hundreds of hours that people volunteer their time for..or the lack of supplies that are faced with sometimes..or the fact that we let every adopter know as much about their animal as we possibly can, but sometimes we don't know anything b/c they have been dumped on our doorstep or left behind in an empty apt for weeks.
So, I give props to Mr. Biden for taking the proper steps to go through a respectable breeder for this particular breed...
Hopefully he will look into our local rescues if he chooses to bring another little fuzzy into his home...B/C even if his new fuzzy may have some socializing issues, the other dog can guide and lead the puppy in the right direction.
Let's hope that the famously gaffe-prone Biden realizes his mistake and adopts a shelter pooch to keep his new puppy company.
You showed your true colors on Mr. Biden's adoption in the above one sentence. "famously gaffe-prone" is a dig, a gratuitious dig from someone feining having heart. You lost me with your headline, but this sentence is who you really are.
Congratulations Joe Biden on your new puppy with a beautiful and fitting name "Champ." I know your story, the pain and challenges you've had to overcome, and the importance of the name "Champ" to you. Your grandkids did well. As to anyone criticizing Mr. Biden's choice, your self-righteous outrage and judgment of others is shameful. VP-elect Biden would not think of saying such things on a public forum. I support several animal rights, welfare, rescue, and legal advocacy groups, and frankly I am appalled at the response to Joe Biden's puppy. All dogs need a home and all homes need a dog. A story that very well could have brought warmth and happiness to millions is marred by snipes and judgement from IMHO individuals who all have something of which others can judge. Champ has a beautiful home, Joe Biden has a beautiful friend. Joe Biden is one of the most compassionate individuals in politics, and of anyone I've met...he is a true friend of human and beast. He has much to concentrate on and the chiding from this should not be part of that. Perhaps allow Mr. Biden some happiness. On another note, negative responses from animal groups have actually caused a backlash...the rest of us who spend time educating the public in the proper treatment and respect of dogs are feeling the negativity, and it has not helped the welfare of dogs in need in any way. Most do not care a whit about the Bidens and where they adopt their animals, and attempting to make this loving man an example is sadly pathetic.
I hope Mr. Biden's new puppy is in his forever home. I think he will be very kind to the dog. I am not a big Biden fan, but give him a break. He says he has shown dogs in the past. Maybe he has in his mind that one of his grandchildren may want to show the dog and so wants a true "pedigree" dog. Now he is getting a dog from the SPCA as a companion. That is great!. There are many great shelter dogs in DE. I am sure he can find a fabulous friend for his dog. I got one of my dogs from "Craig's list" because of frustration w/ the stringent rules of some rescue groups. I know my messy house would never pass a home visit. All three of my dogs are very much loved. My husband's brother has a lovely home w/ a fence and took his lab puppy to obedience classes. He would pass w/ flying colours... unless they found out he got rid of the dog because her shedding messed up his furniture and she really was a lot of trouble. BTW, my I just paid $600.00 for my little one from Craig's List to get his teeth fixed. His previous owner thought he was just too clingy and probably didn't like the way those teeth smelled. I also got a dog from a group in the Baltimore area that rescues many animals from the high kill Baltimore City Animal Shlelter. They were wonderful to work with. The great thing about a dog is if you treat him well, he loves you. It doesn't matter if you are Joe Biden or the lady who cleans toilets for a living.
Let me just say that I'm a big believer in adoption from shelters. I have dogs and cats that are all rescue animals. But the notion that Biden should be criticized for his decision to buy a puppy is ridiculous. The fact is that all animals need a home. If you ridicule Joe for not adopting, then you would obviously have a problem with anyone not adopting. That means there would be tons of pure bred dogs with no forever home. Don't get me wrong, I wish everyone would adopt rather than buy, but the fact is that there are breeders out there that are going to keep breeding animals no matter what. Those animals need homes too. They don't understand that they have led a much more pampered life than strays and rescue animals, all they know is they are alive and they need homes too. I will always patronize and support no-kill shelters because that is important to me in my life, but articles like this that are critical of people's personal decisions just further irritates people with the animal rescue community.
To anyone who has had trouble adopting from a rescue group, try your local "kill" shelter (aka pound). They tend to have a less stringent screening process and you will truly be saving a life in the most literal sense of the word.
Although I am saddened by Joe Biden's decision to buy a puppy rather than adopt, especially since I am a long time believer in adopting animals and donate generously each year to various animal rescues (and have two adopted dogs myself), I am also realistic in the fact that perhaps even Joe Biden was unable to adopt a dog - and maybe due to his age. It is an extremely sad state of affairs that many rescue agencies make it nearly impossible for good, able bodied, people to adopt dogs due to their overly stringent rules. I myself had been turned down by some rescue agencies who have "must have a fence" rules, even though both dogs I eventually adopted elsewhere are indoor dogs and walked regularly with leashes by me and my husband. I also personally know of several other people who have been turned down for similar reasons, or by agencies (such as T.A.R.A in Kansas City, MO) who even discriminate against people due to their age (which is illegal in most other instances, but apparently okay when it comes to adopting homeless pets). It is no wonder then, that these same well meaning people end up going to breeders to buy an animal since it is impossible to adopt one through many rescues. In their overzealous efforts to help animals, some rescues are going overboard and actually turning people off from adopting. Hopefully, some will wake up and realize this before its too late.
I adopted a full-blooded German Shp four years ago from a local shelter so YES there are full-blooded dogs that are in shelters and it's very disappointing that Mr. Biden didn't go to a shelter. All three of my dogs are shelter dogs and that's the only way I roll. It's sad that people spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on dogs from breeders, but my full-blooded German Shep was only $75.00 to adopt. I wish people would use common sense and save a pet!
I recently read that this so called breeder was recently sighted.
I am so dissapointed in Biden. HIs first mistake already.
Also I have worked at a shelter for many years. The reason it is harder to adopt is because they want to make sure the next home this animal gets is a permanent and good home. A great breeder will put you through more as they want their pups to go to permanent homes. not just for a buck. Some rescues I agrre are too critical, so go on to the next. I have done this.
They are the ones that care and must take on the awful job of putting these animals down. so please adopt, if you are serious about a pet, the questions are nothing to the reward your heart will receive.
First of all, it's Biden's business where he decides to acquire his dog. Just because he's a politician doesn't mean that right should be taken away. Too many of the people in charge of deciding who gets a dog from their shelter or rescue group, is far more elitest than Joe Biden! Talk about a power trip! I have owned Dobermans all my life and am very well equipped to train and socialize any pet lucky enough to be chosen by me. However, though I am single with a 15 yr. old daughter, a large home situated on an acre lot surrounded entirely with a McNeil fence, I have been turned down several times by clubs like the Hand Me Down Dobe Club because I have a 3 yr. old grandson, who DOESN'T live with me and visits once a week. Do they think I'm stupid? Do they really believe with my experience I don't have the common sense to socialize any dog introduced in to my home with children.? Neither of the dogs I was interested in were known to be bad with kids but that didn't matter. I am sure there are good people out their working in rescue and shelters but from my experience, they are far and few between. I am totally turned off by the ridiculous and unrealistic hoops these fruitloops want potential "real" rescuers to jump through! I am DONE! Now, THAT is sad....sad for the dogs. Whose fault is that?
I just heard on "This Week" with George S. , Biden announced he is getting a second dog and it will be from the pound. The man has redeemed himself. Thanks Sen. Biden
i have waited for 24 years for a dog. My husband and I were in the car business and it wouldn't have been fair to the dog to be alone most of the time. And I will tell you this much. My husband and I would give a dog a loving home with all the requirements. If they give us a hard time, we too will buy a puppy from a breeder.
We really prefer to adopt, it's going to be THEIR choice, not ours. AT least the VP loves animals. It could be worse you know. All pets need a home.
Like I said earlier let's see you work at a high kill shelter and then tell me buying from a breeder/puppy mill is a responsible thing to do. You put the needles into dog and cats that were dumped into shelters from no fault of their own and kill them. Dogs and cats who were someones pets and were discarded. Yes, lets go ahead and make more innocent animals to kill by buying from puppy mills and breeders. People who think like that do not deserve a pet. It amazes me how selfish people are, it's all about what they want not what is best for the animal. Shame on you!!! But look how some people treat their own children what do you expect.
Susan
someone who works with a high kill shelter.
Most people don't realize most "kennels" and some "breeders" are also considered to be "puppy mills". Furthuremore most "pure breeds" are not pure. A true pure breed has had their DNA tested to make sure it is indeed a pure breed. The only way of knowing otherwise is to know for a fact that the parents, grandparents and great grandparents are pure breeds. They too should have their DNA tested. We, in the USA, consider it to be a "pure breed" dog just because the puppy looks like it should or could be and the parents, or the dogs that are suppose to be the parents, look like they are or could be pure breeds. The AKC does not require any testing or much proof of what a dog really is. As long as they get their money they will give you the paperwork claiming you have a "pure breed" dog. Very criminal. The new pres and vice pres should be looking into crap like that, not adding to it. Maybe they haven't heard how many dogs are without homes ha??
My daughter in CA has two rescue dogs and the owner of the stable where she keeps her horses wanted another dog as his had just died of old age. After looking everywhere for one that resembleded his former dog, they found one in rescue here in Austin, TX. NO, they would not let me get the dog and pay myself to ship it to CA, since it can ONLY be no more than 100 miles from the adoption site. Also, since the dog owner was a senior citizen that was also against him even though he had a vet statement about the care he had given his last dog. My daughter found another dog in southern CA and the rescue people there were very happy to accomodate him. He has made arrangements for rehoming all his animals in case he can no longer care for them. As of last month the dog in Austin is still HERE.
(this is to continue my comment I left Dec 19th at 2:01pm) Oh also I forgot to add that I think it is silly for me getting denied for not having prior husky exp for a husky mix when I also have a two year degree in animal management and interned a whole year at our local zoo and then the following year interned at the Spca and a vet office. so I guess owning a husky mix must be more difficult then taking care of Tigers, Snow Leopards, Lions, Reticulated Python, various Rattlesnakes, Bears, Sea Lions and Rhinos..all animals I took care of and some even played with while at the zoo. I even showed this shelter my degree and a gave Zoo references since I didn't have 3 different vet references and just one vet reference, but still I didn't have prior husky exp I was denied, guess next time I will just go adopt a tiger =p
To all who have posted their frustration over their calls/emails not being returned, I can sort of understand why you'd be lured into buying a dog from a breeder. However, I'm quite sure that if Joe Biden (or more likely, someone working for him) contacted a rescue his inquiry would be returned PRONTO! No shelter or rescue group in the country would miss the opportunity to have the bright light of the Vice President shine on the plight of homeless animals. Through the extensive network that exists for breed rescues, as others have posted, you can be sure that as soon as a purebred puppy came available, he'd have had first dibs.
Mr Biden, you've done your impeccable record on animal rights issues a grave disservice by buying a dog from a puppy mill. Had you adopted a German Shepard, the resulting publicity would have helped countless other dogs languishing in rescues and shelters around the country to find homes, too. I hope the Obama family will not make the same mistake.
I have the same problems with shelters as others have voiced. I have been trying to adopt a small dog for 2 years and have either been turned down or ignored every time. The reasons I've been given vary from my living in an apartment to the fact that I would like to have children in the next couple of years to me not having had a pet in the past. Well like the others, I am in the process of finding a breeder. Too many of these rescue workers act as though they are a judge and jury. I really think they have major power complexes. Makes me sick too since they try to act as if they're whole purpose is to help.
I think the people who go to breeders/ puppy mills should have to work a week at a high kill dog/cat shelter. It might get their heads out of the sand.
Why is everyone so upset. Don't be mad at him be mad at the irresponsible owners. Maybe he wanted a purebred with AKC papers? I am a supporter of some shelters, but I can understand to why people would go with breeders. You know what your getting with a breeder. Plus shelters pretty much require you to give them and arm and leg in order to adopt. If adoption shelters keep making the adoption process so hard, a lot more people are going to start going to breeders and puppy mills and so forth. People who want a dog are going to get a dog weather they get denied at a shelter or not. I mean jesus some of the requirements are crazy. Must be 25, but have a 5 ft fenced in back yard, must live no more than an hour away, must not have an invisble fence, must have three vet references, must have prior dog exp. Like seriously no wonders so many animals cant find homes. For example, my mother said for x-mas I can get a puppy. Now with a four of my cats being from shelters, I went there first and on here. Well I went to our local shelter and filled out an application which got denied. Why? Because my house was in my moms name, not mine and they told me my mom would have to come and fill out the application. Well my mom is a head director nurse and is on call 24/7 she doesn't have time for to go deal with the crazy rude shelter people. Now don't say then how would we have time for a dog, cause I'm about to tell you. Im 22 and finished with school and live at home to save money during this crashing economy time and my job is web design and computer programming so I am always home except for maybe 2 hrs out of the day. So I would always be with dog and take him everywhere with me and he would be my jogging partner. So now I go to another shelter from this site and they require a fence...........well I dont know many people that have fenced in farms....thats a lot of damn land to have fenced. Then my laster shelter attempt was to get a husky mix but first they required THREE vet references...who the hell has three different vets?! My four cats have been going to the same vet since I adopted them when they were kittens. My vet would say nothing but good things, I take my cats to vet at least once a month, if they show the slightest problem....off to the vet. My one cat did not eat a whole day and i was worried so I took her to the vet and they couldn't find anything wrong with her after blood work and everything else and had them do an x ray just to find out she had gas. So its ridiculous to ask for THREE vet references...I think anyone who keeps switching vets may be a bit shady. Then they required prior husky owner exp. Well geez how would anyone get prior husky exp if everyone had that as a requirement, and finally they required me to be 25. So ya know what the shelters in their own way make their own problems. So props to VP Biden for not wanting to go through all the BS hassle. Now don't get me wrong I have been approved and 3 other shelters but they just dont have any dogs there at the moment that fit what I want and that would be good with cats. Hence why I wanted a puppy so he can be socialized with them. So after all the BS at the shelters and their ridiculous requirements...Breeders in the newspaper and on craigslist is where I went. And this puppy has one of the most loving homes, loves playing in the snow with me and our weekly trips to the petstore for new toys and at the end of the day he gets a nice warm spot in bed with me. To bad those shelter dogs could have had a loving home but because shelters now require an arm and a leg those dogs are prolly still in their concentration cell on death row and I forsee a lot more people going to breeders, because like I said in the beginning If someone wants a puppy, they will get one regardless if the shelter denies them or not. So it can be one of their dogs that goes to a loving home or it can be a dog from the papers. Some people may skip the hassle all together of the shelter process after just reading the requirements which are tiring to read on their own. So props for VP Biden.
I am a supporter of both adoption from a rescue/shelter and from a breeder. Did anyone ask VP-elect Joe Biden if he checked out shelters before choosing a purebred GSD? Is it any of our business - NO. I am an owner of two purebred GSD and my breeder is a responsible breeder.
Being in the position he will be in - quite frankly - I would not take a shelter dog either. You only get to see the temperment of that dog for such a short time before the adoption. Would you put an unknown temperment dog in the same room with your children/grandchildren and take the chance of a possible bite/attack? With proper training this GSD puppy can be all that VP-Elect Joe Biden wants in a dog; companion for himself and family. Maybe he has intention of someone showing the dog - thus a purebred with papers is needed.
If shelters would do all that they can to reunite their dogs that come in to the ORIGINAL owner if they are microchipped/tattoed and find out the true story some of these animals would not be there. Some of the shelters I have been to are in the most deplorable of conditions it is unreal.
To Joe Biden - good luck on your beautiful GSD puppy - don't forget the training and socialization!
Instead of being upset this holidays season with someone who purchased a dog from a breeder, not a puppy mill, let's promote pet owners to spay and neuter their pets.
It's sad that he choice a breeder over an adoption. However, to get the dog from a puppy mill. Now that's sad. Bad, Bad Biden.
As a member of a breed club, I am very proud of the work we do in rescue. I wonder how many are aware that the first thing many shelters do is call pure breed rescue groups to come and foster/adopt (paying fees) "their breed" when one appears in the shelter. Our clubs raises tens of thousands of dollars for the rescue of our dogs, and that does not even come close to the affiliated groups within our umbrella.
Responsible breeders are the first to take back their dogs, and are not the source of the mixed breed dogs appearing in shelters.
I believe in adoption. I have adopted many pets. However, we should not assume that he did not attempt to adopt. I myself am in the process of adopting a pet, however I have had difficulty like Bonnie stated getting someone to let me do so. It is quite odd, because I have adopted retired race horses and paid for their entire lives to prevent laughter, and I see the numbers of dogs on these adoption sites. Only one person out of 5 attempts has even responded to my desire to adopt a pet? I can understand that they want the pets in the best home possible, however, I really think it is simple. Return the persons email or phone call, and meet with the potential person who wants to adopt, and visit the home or follow up within a reasonable time. I can see someones frustration pointing them into the direction to purchasing a pet. It has crossed my mind, and I too am being particular in what I adopt due to a small child. I can only help to the best of my ability and the willingness of the person on the other end. I am not sure why someone would stop my from adopting as I have a farm, warm house, and excellent references from vets and professional families?
my name is susan and i brought in a dog about two or three weeks ago and you said that you can not give me the dog back i think thats bullshit i think the haven is a nasty place for animals and it is inhumane they are laying in there own pee and poop they have kennels stacked on top of kennels i honestly dont see how you can take care off all those damn animals.i personaly think this is stupid and i would like to know what the hell is going on. thank you
Biden's breeder is a puppy mill. Read the inspection report:

Kennel Where Biden Bought Puppy is Cited
12-15-08
By: Commonwealth Confidential
The state Department of Agriculture has issued citations to the owner of the Chester County kennel where Vice President-elect Joe Biden recently bought a puppy.
In a kennel inspection report posted online Monday night Linda Brown, owner of Wolf Den kennel, was cited for violating the dog law for failing to provide records for dogs purchased or sold and failing to produce complete rabies vaccination records for her adult dogs.
Rabies vaccinations are required for all dogs over three months of age.
Dog wardens also found a strong ammonia smell inside the house where a number of dogs are housed, and broken wires and piping in several outdoor kennel areas. As a result they issued warnings for maintenance and sanitation and will conduct a follow up inspection in the near future, the report said.
Brown could face fines of up to $500 for each citation. It was the kennel's first negative inspection report in five years.
Brown, of Spring City, who also operates as Jolindy's German Shepherds, holds a commercial kennel license that allows her to keep more than 250 dogs. She had 84 dogs on the property when the inspection took place on Dec. 10.
Biden bought the six-week-old male German Shepherd puppy from the kennel earlier this month.
Wow, the self righteous indignation. You bet, EVERYBODY should have to adopt the cast offs of the rest of the irresponsible people in the world. I have great admiration for anyone that takes in rescues, provides food and shelter and most importantly, training. However, no one, including people in the public eye, should be obligated to choose a pet from only those who were unlucky enough to originally be placed or bred by irresponsible people or in some rare cases, people in unfortunate circumstances that makes what's best for the animal to be turned over to a shelter.
I've personally cared for 2 dogs in my life time that were "rescues" and had other dogs that I chose to take on but were not my breed of choice. My latest adoption of a pet, I finally had the opportunity to research, decide on and choose the breed I really wanted and found a reputable breeder to acquire a puppy from. I travelled a great distance and spent considerable money to get my new puppy. That was my RIGHT.
The focus should surely be on advocating responsible breeding and pet ownership rather than vile statements being thrown at anyone not choosing "your" way but nevertheless appearing to make a responsible pet decision for themselves.
In fairness to Joe Biden, I myself have spent weeks calling breed specific rescue leagues and have not received a single call or email in return. While I understand these leagues are volunteer driven, they have to be responsive if they want their animals to be adopted. In addition, every animal at any shelter has a story and some aren't good. Joe Biden (and others) have young children and their safety to be concerned with. And, most shelters and organizations in my area will not adopt to families with children under 10 or 12.
It's just so sad. Obama seems to be so fresh and new, but he picked a guy for VP that's the some old stuff. I just don't get it. Why get a dog from a puppy mill when the president elect has been so vocal in wanting to do the right thing in adopting a dog for his family? Is he just not very bright? He just doesn't seem to get it on a number of issues. I hope nothing ever happens to Obama.
This is Biden's first mistake. Not only is this a disgrace when millions of animals are killed in the "shelters" in this country, but when the economy is at its' very worst, what does he do? He shows off his affluence by going to an expensive breeder, then an even more expensive training camp. He should be ashamed of himself.
How sad! So many rescues work endlessly to promote adoption instead of supporting mills and breeders and then Biden pulls this off. Talk about setting a bad example. Both my dogs are rescues (one is a mill rescue) and the love you receive from a rescue is unexplainable. Hopefully there is still hope with Obama making a wise choice, obviuosly his side-kick didn't. Couldn't Biden at least bought from a reputable breeder?? Shame, shame on him!
I support shelters wholeheartedly but not all shelter will give a dog to someone who works long hours and even if they provide dog walkers each day...Some shelters do not like this and it is for this reason alone that people seek a breeder...If you have been given the change to adopt an animal from a shelter, good for you...some are less fortunate as shelters seem to rule out many good people with loving nature, just because they are gone to many hours in the day...All animals need love, all animals can be loved whether it be from a shelter, breeder, farm, etc. What is the difference if you are giving your love to an animal in need...The choices are high kill shelters, no kill shelters who have preference in who adopt, stray adoption or breeders...don't all these animals count, don't all these animals need love, do we all have love in our heart for another heart and if so, who is to say why we are not to have an animal to love. Give love to those who acknowledge your kindness and the rest will come....Shelters have no right to say I work to long, shelters have no right to turn me down...I chose to love an animal, it dosn't matter where it came from, it does matter that it is getting love and a warm home and shelter from me!!!
I am a pet owner, having voluneered in the past and have adopted most of my pets in the past, however for the past 4 years have looked all over the south shore shelters of Massachusettes to adopt a dog but have had no luck as many of the volunteers tell me I they will not give me a dog unless I work under 4 hours a day as a dog or cat should not be alone for 8 hours a day.
I am an animal lover and treat my pets with utmost respect and love, they come first in my life and are more inportant to me than anyone else who is in my life.
The last animal I had, passed away from old age 5 years ago and I have searched shelters for another pet only to be turned down buy volunteers who think they know me and think they know what is best for an animal.
I dissagree with the person who said Joe Biden is an idiot and doesn't know what he is doing. Perhaps Joe Biden was turned down by animal sheter volunteers who thought he worked long hours too!!!
I have since bought a Yorkie from a breeder as I searched long and hard for the right pet for me...I fail to see that I would be a risk to any animal if I worked 8 hours a day, having dog walkers or doggie day care while I am away and I also fail to see the logic of any volunteer who thinks living in a cage for 24 hours a day is better than a loving, giving, warm home to live in.
Perhaps the volunteer needs a lesson in what love is all about and stop thinking they are above anyone who can give a loving home to a cat, dog, horse or whatever pet is in need of love.
Volunteers seem to have the attitude that they are better than me or anyone who works to make a living.
Don't judge the person unless you know the whole story...obviously shelters think they know who is right or wrong to own an animal...You don't know me and you lost out...
My yorkie has the most wonderful and loving home...too bad volunteers don't understand or consider someone who has to make a living 8 hours a day to actually keep a home going and feed our precious animals.
Hats off to Joe Biden for buying the dog of his dreams and for giving a puppy a chance at a new life in a hopefully, loving home.
Mutts are just as good as Pure Breeds. Joe Biden should of adopted a shelter dog like I did. I am only 12 so my mom had to adopt her really but at least I done my part and adopted. SHAME ON JOE BIDEN!!!!!

ASPCA Responds to New Biden Family Puppy;
Reiterates Tips on Finding Responsible Breeder
NEW YORK, December 16, 2008 In response to recent news reports regarding Vice President-Elect Jo Biden's new German Shepherd puppy and subsequent reports that the Pennsylvanian Department of Agriculture just last week issued five warnings and two citations to the kennel operator where the puppy was purchased the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) today reminds potential pet parents of some valuable tips for considering adding a furry family member to the household or when purchasing pets from a breeder.
At the ASPCA, we are happy the Biden family has chosen to bring a new pet into their home, said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. Pets provide us with unconditional love, and I'm sure the Bidens will certainly find a loyal family companion in their new puppy. But we also want to remind people who are looking for a breeder, that for the health and well-being of the dog, they do their homework to find a responsible one.
The kennel inspection report said that the owner of the Wolf Den Kennel in Spring City, Penn., failed to provide records for dogs purchased or sold, and failed to produce complete rabies vaccination records for her adult dogs. Warnings for maintenance and sanitation were also issued after inspectors discovered a strong ammonia smell inside the house where dogs were kept, poor ventilation, and broken wires and piping in some outdoor kennel areas.
Because there are homeless pets awaiting adoption in every community in the nation, the ASPCA strongly advocates that potential pet parents "make pet adoption their first option" when considering bringing a dog or cat into their home. Local animal shelters offer many choices, whether one's preference is dog or cat, small or large, purebred or lovable mutt.
It is disappointing that Biden got a dog from a breeder and that the 3 month old pup is immediately going to a 6 week training class with a K-9 trainer. But I am not suprised by the do as I say, not as I do, elite-liberal Biden that hardly gives a dime to charity. And it is so strange how the supposed animal-loving but liberal characters give him a pass, it's pathetic.
What a shame! I thought the same thing as this author when I first saw the news report that he adopted from a breeder. I don't feel compelled in any way to support the breeders. Breeders will always find homes for their pups, even if they have to reduce the price they usually charge. We are in a similar situation as Biden.......We wish to adopt a puppy too (in the spring). We have a personal preference too. (yellow lab) But I would not even consider a breeder when there are so many labs and lab mixes in shelters that desperately NEED homes. You see, people, that is the difference.......pets in shelters NEED homes.......pets at a breeder WILL get to a home, one way or another..........a "pedigreed" dog won't be euthanized by his breeder.
I agree. Biden would have set a fine example for others to follow. He would have given some much needed free press to shelters across the country. Let's hope the Pres. makes a better example.
God for Mr. Biden,
I disagree with whomever said he is ignorant or whoever is dissapointed in his choice to buy or adopt. I have tried to adopt a dog and a cat for 4 years and have been turned down for working 8 hours a day.
In the past, I have adopted all of my animals but with more and more no kill shelters popping up, many shelters decide what dog or cat goes to whom and who is fit to take one.
The volunteers at shelters do not know me and do not know the love that I have inside me to share with a pet. I have volunteered at shelters in the past and if one can give their heart, they they should be able to take an animal home.
I am not an abuser of pets, I am however a loving kind individual who loved them dearly. No volunteer is better than me and should not act like they are doing me or anyone a favor.
I have tried for 4 years to adopt and cannot tell you how many shelters I have been too because the list is to long. I finally bought a dog and I am thrilled with her and have given her a warm and loving home.
I applaud Joe Biden, for having enough love in his heart to give a dog....good for him for finding one...
Awww Lori, what a beautiful comment:
"They're all wonderful dogs and I couldn't imagine life without them. To me, my Shepherd mix is just as beautiful as any pure bred"
It is people like you that make doing rescue all worth it :)
Like most of the rest of you I am so disheartened and disappointed by this decision. What is even more disappointing is when you read the different comments and blogs on this, the majority of the comments supports Bidens decision to buy instead of adopt. I thought we had made more progress on that by now. This was truly an opportunity to set a better example. Sigh, how can we think allowing uncontrolled breeding (of any sort) and then simply killing the excess is right in any way?
Oh Rachel come on! You want VP Biden to return the dog? And what will happen to the puppy once it is returned? So now we shun pure breds because they aren't in a publicly funded shelter? I think we are missing the big picture here...sadly.
Biden tells bad words about Russia :-/
Russian people too treat kindly animals and help them.
Come on our site: http://www.dogshelter.ru
We wait for friends :)
Very unfortunate...
This morning CBS news reported pet homelessness, mostly due to foreclosure, is up 45% from last year. Senator Biden missed an excellent opportunity to make a case for homeless pets everywhere..
I would like to say that he is ignorant but he is obviously stupid,
A good political move would have been to adopt.
Not even in office and making the wrong choice already.
Sad news indeed. Thank you, Petfinder, for posting this forum. Clearly we are all on Petfinder because we support animal rescue...and yes, everyone has the right to choose whether to adopt or to perpetuate breeders, which, sorry folks, are fundamentally in conflict with everything for which wonderful Petfinder stands.
As for the rationalization that "every dog deserves a home" - that makes me want to scream every time I hear it. Dogs created by breeders purely for the purpose of making said breeder rich are nothing more than dollar signs, and needless ones at that. Unless you are seeking a dog or cat to then show professionally, you do not need to suport a breeder. With the staggering numbers of dogs (many of them purebred) euthanized daily simply due to space constraints, unfair indeed to equate said Shelter dogs, who so sorely need a chance, with puppies who never had to be created in the first place, and were done so purely for profit.
Posters are right when they note that breeders aren't ever going to go away - but for such a high-profile person to go this route, in an era when animal rights are so much more at the forefront, shame on him. Biden had a stellar opportunity to support a Shepherd rescue and he blew it. He has clearly gone down a few pegs in the eyes of even strong supporters, which is wholly earned.
For what it's worth, my beloved Shepherd was a purebred shelter dog, who was there through no fault of her own, and then went on to be an irreplaceable, wonderful member of our family for nearly 11 years. I work daily on behalf of a proud and stellar no-kill shelter, and wish that every shelter were able to be no-kill - we are nowhere near that utopia however...
I only wish that a few of these money-hungry breeders would walk along the kennels at their local kill shelter (and there are plenty of them in PA), to look into the eyes of all of the wonderful dogs and cats whose time is limited - and who are days/hours away from being killed, through no fault of their own.
Talk about a lost oppurtunity to do good and promote a good cause and set a good example. He hasn't even been sworn in yet and I have already lost so much respect for this man. I sincerely hope Obama sticks to his guns and adopts a dog as he has always mentioned.
To make matters worse - its a GERMAN SHEPHERD! I mean come on you can't go into any animal shelter in the country and not trip over a slew of purebred adoptable German Shepherds desperately needing homes! So, so sad!
Its really sad that Biden wouldn't rescue a dog given the economic condition and how many dogs have been abandoned as a result of the housing crisis.
Please e-mail Vice President-elect Biden at http://change.gov/page/s/yourvision to firmly, yet politely ask him to cancel his purchase and adopt from a shelter instead. Feel free to include some or all of the following talking points:
1) Let VP-elect Biden know it costs taxpayers $2 billion a year to round up, shelter, and euthanize 4-5 million homeless dogs. By adopting, he will set a national example that would be a win-win for homeless dogs and Americans who are looking to put more money in their pockets.
2) The housing and foreclosure crisis has resulted in millions more animals being dumped at shelters that are already overwhelmed. All Americans, even the four-legged ones, deserve a place to call home. Instead of supporting an industry that breeds dogs many of which end up in shelters (25% of dogs in shelters are pure-breed dogs), lets find homes for the dogs that are already here.
3) In A Rare Breed of Love, President-elect Obama pledges his support to protect the millions of innocent animals who are brutalized 24 hours a day by the puppy mill industry by helping to shut them down and promote adoption. Why isn't VP-elect Biden upholding this pledge?
4) Since the buying habits of our leaders and celebrities are, sadly, imitated by millions, remind VP-elect Biden that he has a golden opportunity to set a humane example. All he has to do is cancel his purchase and have a big ol’ press conference at a shelter!
Yes-adopting from a shelter is great and you would hope that public officials would show their support of dog adoptions from shelters by doing it themselves, but some of the articles mention that he's purchasing this from a breeder who he has a professional relationship with; if you already have experience with the breed and the breeder's dogs as well as his/her training skills, why WOULD'NT you go with them?
Thanks for letting us know Emily....during this election I was one of who knows how many that had a hard time deciding who to vote for. I ended up voting for Obama/Biden strictly on the issues of animals. Joe Biden by far had the best record! To see him buy a dog from a breeder rather then adopting just made my heart sink.
Wow people! I support both side of this frankly. I own three dogs, two of which were adopted from a shelter. I even adopted one of my cats from a shelter and took in the other from the streets! However, breeders are still going to breed and where are these puppies supposed to go? As long as these breeders are breeding according to the law and responsibly (no puppy mills), then who are we to dictate where someone decides to get their puppy? Again, I support both sides but breeders are never going away, never. We need to concentrate more on the horrible puppy mills and rid the world of what these irresponsible breeders do.
Do you have your own children, or know anyone who refuses to adopt? You give shelters, rescues, and sanctuaries a bad name and I support all three! Who do you think you are? Get off your high-horse. Congratulations Joe on your new puppy! You sincerely deserve this moment and this is one lucky puppy. I've owned dogs from breeders, shelters, and kennels and loved them all. These are personal choices, and judging can get very scary very fast: do you eat meat? wear any leather? use toiletries tested on animals? take medications tested on animals? drive a car? water a lawn? Check under you own hood before pointing fingers. Who are we to judge how one brings home a beautiful loving animal? Every home needs a dog, every dog needs a home. The Biden's, I and thousands give to shelters and don't need preaching from the likes of you.
What a lost opportunity! Love my mutts!!
Since our politicians don't give nearly enough attention to animal issues, it would be nice if they at least set a good example.
Janet,
I must disagree with your comment: "If the pup makes him happy that is all that counts and not what anyone else thinks." I tend to disagree with the thinking that as long as the senator is happy, a puppy in a shelter will be euthanized and without a forever home. I don't see how anyone can have that mindset and be okay with themselves. I hope that you see the error of your ways, Janet. It is unfortunate that you believe the uneducated choice that a human made is worth the life of a living being. Very sad, indeed.
i really wish important people would set good examples and save a dogs life
Joe once again proves he is a elistist, a rescue dog wasnt good enough for him? only saving grace is that a shepherd will be smarter than joe and should have him fully trained in by the time it is a years old. joe is a bad bad man. I own an aussie shepherd mix puppy from a rescue opration her mom was aussie her dad a shepherd and at a year old she is smarter than vp elect biden
I don't see anything wrong with him buying a puppy, sure there is alot out there he could have adopted but it is his choice like it is everyone else's choice on if they want to buy or adopt, No matter who he is he has a right to choose. I hope he has a good one that will be a good example of the breed that will give them a good name for I myself is a german shepherd owner.
If the pup makes him happy that is all that counts and not what anyone else thinks.
Janet in VA
To Carlos,
From my work in rescue, we never deny a qualified person. Unlike a breeder, we sincerely care where our dogs go to and there must have been something that was holding them back from allowing you to adopt. Maybe you didn't have enough time, a fenced in yard, etc. If anything, you could have offered to become a foster for the breed you were interested in and gained experience with the dog you wanted.
And what happens when breeders can't sell their puppies? They stop breeding!
Not only did a dog lose out on a forever home, but VP elect Biden lost out on a chance to experience what it is like to give an unwanted pet a home.
It is such a shame that someone who has so much influence and is so much in the public eye did not choose to set a better example for the American public. What a disappointment.
Ellie is the best dog. She knows that we adopted her and shows us endless unconditional love. Sorry Senator Biden, you'll miss out on that!
I agree that people have the right to make their own decisions, but when those decisions contribute to the deaths of millions of animals, I simply cannot support that. To the poster before me: Cars are not killed because no one wants to adopt them.
It's so sad! With the state of the economy so many pets are being abandoned or given to shelters. Here in Michigan, people are losing their homes and some are leaving the animals in them to starve! To see our next VP go BUY a puppy! I am disgusted! Shelters are overflowing with animals that need forever homes! I have four rescue animals and I wouldn't have it any other way! Just pushes me to advocate and educate about animal rescue and adoption!
Hello,
I do not know all the circumstances involved in Senador Biddens decision to buy, but he experienced some of the difficulties I did when I attempted to adopt, I don't blame him for buying!
I tried to adopt a Shih Tzu, I contacted several places that had them up for adoption. I spend over two months trying to convince them, I would be a good owner. No one would even meet with me. I was always denied. I was given all kinds of excuses, why I would not be a good owner. i.e. being a service member, being single, not having any references. ETC. I was actually looking for a dog with special needs, as I work next to a vets office, have a very flexible schedule and healthy finances to support any needs the dog may have. Eventually, After being rejected so many times, I decided to buy I found a dog in Craigslist for sale . I bought it, he wasn't in the greatest shape. He had several medical issues, with the vets help with in a couple of weeks he was in good shape. So, before pointing fingers at anyone for buying rather than adopting from your "rescue groups" . You may want to consider reviewing your adoption policies. I value my time, and If I would have known, that i would spend two months trying to persuade some over jealous dog guardian of my genuine desire and ability to care for a dog, just to be told no. I would have just bought one from the start.
if you like, I'll send you the many emails I saved from our exchanges.
having said that, I appreciate, the fact that you are rescuing dogs and trying to find good homes for them, but your adoption process needs reviewing. It is just impossible to adopt from your agencies, if you are a first time owner.
Sincerely,
Carlos E. Marin
How disappointing... Possibly the first of many? I went to the local shelter here and they had TWELEVE German Shepherd puppies. Mr. Biden, your puppy was one state over in Ohio!
I wish everyone would adopt from a shelter or something like it, but I also think that being hateful about other people's choices is what makes us all uncomfortable. I would never buy a brand new car, but it is important for some people. I think we can encourage our celebrities and politicians to be aware of the over abundance of pets who need homes, but we should not hate on folks who make a different choice. That's just putting more meaness out in the world...
I don't have anything against buying a GSD puppy from a reputable breeder. But Biden didn't get his puppy from a reputable breeder. Looks more like a publicity stunt to visit PA and get a puppy.
The breeder of Biden's puppy, Linda Brown was suspended by the AKC for falsifying registration papers. She submitted 3 little registrations she knew were false.
http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/8439/PA/US
Seems like she's a volume breeder too. Lots of puppies. And no working titles on her breeding stock. And no listing for her dogs on the OFA site either.
This is the type of breeder that gives reputable breeders a bad name.
I was hoping Joe Biden was part of the plan to promote the adoption of rescued pets. His dog is cute, but so was Stella a Belgian Sheepdog that I adopted from the SPCALA and Jethro my Border Collie mix I adopted at the Castaic Animal Shelter. Beautiful, smart ,loyal , loving friends.

I am really disapointed. It would have been a huge endorsement for rescues.
What a shame that he didn't adopt. Shelter animals are the best. It's like they spend the rest of their lives thanking you for rescuing them. We have 4 rescued pets...2 cats & 2 dogs. We just rescued a full-blooded wire haired fox terrier from the shelter in our county. She is the victim of a puppy mill. We can tell this poor dog was treated horribly because she is afraid of EVERYTHING, including a kiss on the head! She didn't even know what a "treat" was. She had to be taught to trust people. We can tell she has been beaten with some kind of a strap because she is afraid of anything that resembles a belt, leash, collar..etc. She had to have been kept in a cage with either a dirt or concrete floor because she is afraid of the grass. Thank goodness she was able to join our family and now receives lots of "treats" and especially love! She is slowly realizing that her life is more than just producing puppies on a blanket! She has turned out to be a very sweet girl. Also, this breed is one of the best for people with allergies! I hope Obama keeps his word on adopting their dog...but, he is a politician! You just can't trust any of them.
It's a little disappointing, but I am happy to know that Mr. Biden is taking the time to train (or at least pay someone else to train) his dog so that it can become a happy and adjusted part of his family. Maybe instead of concentrating on the "negative" of his NOT having adopted his puppy we could focus on the POSITIVE when he decides to have his puppy "fixed" !!!!! RIGHT!!!? :)
Just another one of the glorious ways the new Presidential party will influence America....
And if he was that interested in German Shepards, there's plenty of rescues for the breed in this big country! I hope that Obama does not follow lead and instead chooses to rescue a puppy from a shelter for his daughters.
"Time for change"...let's see how much CHANGE those newly elected will make in the area of animal rights. =/ Not off to a very good start now, are they?!
I definitely think that rescue should be everyone's first option. I feel this is especially true for Joe Biden because he is a public figure. He needs to set a better example. I don't have a problem with people buying puppies from REPUTABLE breeders and then getting them fixed. It would be nice if people would choose to adopt AND buy a puppy. This would be a good option for Mr. Biden. It's not like he's going to have to take care of the dog anyway. I'm sure there is staff to do all that. He should make a sizable donation to a rescue, maybe a rescue that specializes in German Shepards. He can afford to do that. Then he is, at least, helping the cause.
While I'm pleased he is adding a dog to his family, I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't rescue a dog. I, too, love German Shepherds and had my heart set on a pure bred black and tan. However, earlier this year I got a Shepherd mix pup from a rescue, and then I got two Great Pyr/Anatolian Shepherds from another rescue I found on Petfinder. They're all wonderful dogs and I couldn't imagine life without them. To me, my Shepherd mix is just as beautiful as any pure bred. :-)
I wish he would have considered a shelter first. I worked at a shelter that would pull from overcrowded shelters where pups were still killed for lack of space. yep, he has the right to choose....shame he made THAT choice.
Joe Biden is a fascist pig! but wait, that is actually insulting pigs, so I take that back, he is simply a fascist, this is what all those animal rights friends of mine who voted for Obama get.
What do you expect from the ELITE?
I ADOPTED my PURE BRED beagle from a SHELTER, and I saved her life in doing so, wanting a PURE BREED dog is NOT an EXCUSE.
This is very sad. I can't imagine why anyone would choose to buy an animal, whether it be from a breeder or a pet store, when there are so many homeless pets in shelters who need good homes.
For all of you inquiring about President Elect Obama.....He has ALREADY said he was "ADOPTING" You'd think people with SO many opinions of what is RIGHT and WRONG and where you SHOULD and SHOULDN't get a dog would KNOW that. Mr. Biden is giving a puppy a good home, why not be happy for that? geesh!! German Shepherds CAN have alot of problems, if Mr. Biden chose to go with a dog he could research and see parents of WHY does that matter? It keeps a dog OUT of a shelter doesn't it? GOOD LUCK with the GORGEOUS puppy Mr. Biden! I will CONTINUE to support shelters and adoption programs but think everyone has a RIGHT to their own decision.
That's awful. I don't think breeders should even exist unless they are actually trying to improve on the breed. Not just inbreed for profit!! I really hope the Obamas do their research and find a dog that fits their needs and not just settle on some random puppy mill puppy because it's cute. If there are pet allergies in the house then they should consider a poodle mix. Standard poodles make great family pets and are "hypo-allergenic". I'm not a fan of the show cuts though. I don't like "prissy" dogs.
Disappointing and Disgusting...
I also notice the president Elect had some lame excuse about his daughter being "allergic"... to what...???
I'm sure there are plenty of adoptable pets that are compatable with most allergies...
"Time for a change"...
oh right...
Thank You for reading...
Gary
I am disappointed every time I see someone in the public eye choose to buy instead of adopt.
They have the power to influence millions of people, and they choose to buy from a breeder.
Makes me so sad, when I think about the next time I have to kill a puppy only because the shelter is over-crowded and he doesnt have a home.
That makes me sick, it's not the puppies fault , that is one
cute puppy but why could he not adopt a shelter dog, why
because he's got the money to do this or is it because
he looks a shelter dogs as second hand and he is to good for that, it makes me sick!
There are some breeds that you can't find very often on petfinder... a GERMAN SHEPHERD is NOT one of them.... what a disappointment.
Shame on him! The entire country is watching him and he just set a very bad example. I am a big fan of Biden and he has just really let me down.
Never was a Biden fan and this just further illustrates why. If you read the comments on the Delaware article, this 'breeder' is nothing more than a puppy miller. What a world of good he could have done for shelter and rescues with such a public act. Let's hope Mr. Obama doesn't follow suit. Very sad that he wasted such a public opportunity to save a life and promote adoption, but then again, Biden, has always been about Biden. In this case, he's publicly supported a miller/BYB whose dogs live horrific lives for the almighty dollar. Shame Shame Shame
I dont think hes educated on the issue, I think we should do something more besides just commenting on various boards and flagging breeders on craigslist...I think I'm going to send a letter and/or email to Biden educating him on the issue of adoption and bringing the light to whats the right thing to do...I think we can do more as people who love animals, animals dont get much voice, so we have to stand up for them...I hope other people will write to him too...=)
It's really disheartening when politicians who represent change and a brighter future do not extend that vision to include the shelter animals that deserve a second chance.
He's giving a dog a home. I SUPPORT adoption but there are people who want pure breds from BREEDERS, those puppies have to get homes too! I don't know WHY people want to pick apart his decision. I UNDERSTAND there ARE pure breds in shelters...but if the puppies that breeders are SELLING don't find homes theoretically those dogs COULD end up in shelter too right?? Some people WANT certain bloodlines, proven dogs, guaranteed hips, WHAT EVER. THAT is their CHOICE. Be happy a dog is getting a home and it WON'T end up in a shelter. I'm tired of all the BASHING just because someone doesn't do what ANOTHER person THINKS they should. HOW depressing!! It's supposed to be to each his own isn't it??????
He could have adopted from a shelter and paid to have him trained. What a disgrace. Obama should adopt a PitBull puppy for his daughters. They are great dogs and that's what the majority of puppies and dogs are now in shelters.
Shame on you Biden!
I am scared, scared of ppl jumping on the bandwagon and going to flea markets and BYB's to get this breed. Then when the hips go in a few years, they will be in the shelter getting PTS or rescues will be scrambling to pull them or pay for surgeries. Just a vicious cycle. I am so disappointed. These ppl have to set an example. The state we are in now w/ overcrowded shelters --it is a shame. BREEDING KILLS and we all need to ADOPT. Until the shelters are empty we HAVE TO promote adoption!
I hope that he gets so much negative reaction that Obama decides to adopt!
are we really surprised by this? most of the holier-than-thou people in hollywood as well as our friends, the politicians, are above adopting dogs. they just act as though they know nothing about the problem, because ignorance is bliss, and apparently feel the need to have those AKC papers for THEIR dog to complement their stature in the world. With all the publicity surrounding Obama's pet-finding crusade, it will be pretty hard for Joe Biden to plead ignorance on this one.
upsetting. :/
Senator Biden - I am very disappointed that you would purchase a puppy from a breeder: Did you think about adopting a dog from the MANY rescues in the United States? I certainly hope that you educate yourself to the plight of dogs/cats in puppy mills and breeders.
Very disappointing...
Since our politicians don't give nearly enough attention to animal issues, it would be nice if they at least set a good example.
